Yumi Yoshioka is from Osaka, Japan. Her piano lessons started at the age five under the Yamaha music school program. As she continued to study piano privately with Mayumi Takato, she also enrolled at the Monte Vista Christian High School in California for one year. She completed her Associate of Science degree at Vincennes University in Indiana, where she was awarded as the most outstanding graduating student.
Further studies with William Hughes at Indiana State University (ISU) earned her a Bachelor of Music in Performance with emphasis in Piano Pedagogy. She was selected to be one of the most outstanding players throughout her studies at ISU. Post graduate studies include a Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Pedagogy with emphasis in Performance and Musical Research at the University of South Carolina.
She has presented, taught, performed and accompanied in the US, Japan and Malaysia. Her interests in research include the use of technology in piano instruction for both mainstream and visually impaired students. She has also conducted research on the development of teaching strategies in piano using Comprehensive Musicianship through Performances.
Dr. Yoshioka is a founder of the Community Music Program in School of the Arts, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). She is currently an adjunct music faculty in USM and is maintaining a very active involvement in the music community as a part time music lecturer, clinician, presenter, performer, presenting at seminars and guiding potential young pianist p in Penang, Malaysia.
