Majoring in Pianoforte and minoring in singing, Rita Liew received her music education from the Singapore Bible College (SBC) School of Church Music, graduating with a Bachelor of Church Music in 1992.
Upon graduation, Rita spent 2 years as a Choir Director in Christ Church, Likas. She also helped out with various choirs within the Anglican Diocese of Sabah before leaving for Thailand as a church planter with Overseas Missionary Fellowship from 1994-2006. During this period, Rita taught music to the local Thai people and also participated in a hymnal project focused on preserving the Thai indigenous music into written form. Her experience working with an international team while living in a foreign culture prepared Rita to work with a diverse group people, regardless of age and background.
In May 2006, Rita and her children relocated to Singapore where they currently live. Making the switch from missionary work to full time music teaching, Rita was introduced to both the Encore Music Education syllabus and ANZCA (Australian New Zealand Cultural Arts) exam syllabus for her students. Currently, Rita offers the Encore On Keys and Kinder Beat program as an enrichment to children who are in kindergartens. She found that this program not only transformed her students, but it transformed her teaching as well! As an early childhood music provider, Rita is officially registered with ONE@ECDA (Early Childhood Development Authority) of Singapore.
In 2010, Working together with Mark Gibson and Morna Robinson of Encore Music Education, Rita organised the first teachers training event and concert performance of Encore students. One year later, in 2011, Rita founded Music Matters as a platform for music teachers to meet, network and learn together. Her vision is for teachers to empower themselves to become better teachers by going through personal and professional development. Today, Rita provides teacher’s training to piano teachers who wants to use this program in their syllabus too. Teaching music is no longer just a career catering to an examination requirement, but a privilege and a joy! Together with a team of teachers trained in using the Encore methods, Rita’s dream is to bring big experiences to your little ones through music lessons, starting with one lesson at a time!
Music Matters has also taken part in voluntary work, assisting social enterprises who work with youth at risk by giving music training to victims of abuse, and youngsters in incarceration. Through music, we can help to instill self confidence and a sense of self worth in each individual.
