Jo has been playing the piano since the age of three. Her pathway to becoming a professional musician, however, has taken an unusual route. After completing secondary school, Jo was awarded a Bachelor of Applied Science degree with Distinction. She then worked as a radiographer in private practices and hospitals for several years. Jo’s creative instincts started to draw her away from the medical field towards graphic design. After completing an accelerated course, she worked full-time as a graphic designer and continues to complete projects in this field.
Throughout this period, Jo continued to play the piano at a semi-professional level. She enjoyed successes including being a finalist in the Queensland Piano Competition in 2007 and 2008, and performed in the Australian National Yamaha Piano Competition in 2007.
By 2014 her long-held passion and dedication to the piano inspired Jo to commence studying music full-time at the University of Queensland. She completed her Bachelor of Music (Hons. Class I) degree and is now studying towards a Master of Music award in piano performance with the highly distinguished Dr Max Olding AM.
During her undergraduate studies, Jo was awarded the Donald Tugby Prize for piano performance, the Queensland Eisteddfod Piano Aggregate Award, and was a finalist in the 4MBS Musica Viva Sid Page Memorial Prize in Chamber Music.
Jo holds Associate and Licentiate Diplomas in Classical Piano Performance from the Australian Music Examinations Board. Her professional experience includes recital engagements, private piano teaching, adjudicating and working with the team at Encore Music Education. Jo was the featured artist at the Encore Singapore Concert in December 2017 where she performed solo, two piano and piano four hand works by Liszt, Dvorak, Poulenc, Gershwin and Piazzolla.
