Mark Murphy

Mark is a Melbourne based drummer, author, educator, pianist, ANZCA examiner and workshop presenter.

Born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, Mark began playing drums at the age of fourteen. His teenage years included many years of dedicated practise, jamming with his guitarist brother and weekends playing with mates in garages. The garage bands developed to the level of playing local gigs and parties. This eventually moved onto the pub scene, clubs and music festivals. Mark did his first studio session at the age of sixteen. This would be the first of many recording projects.

Mark studied with some of Melbourne’s finest drummers including Bill Coombes, Mark Trask and Paul Keane.

In his early twenties, while constantly gigging and recording, Mark started more formal training with piano, music theory and a long string of music examinations. Around this time he also started teaching drums on a small scale.

As the years rolled by he achieved the Diploma level with drums, Grade 7 piano and Grade 5 music theory. His teaching numbers grew and eventually started teaching piano and music theory in addition to drums.

Mark has combined his many years of industry experience with his formal training to inspire and educate new generations of musicians.

In 2001 Mark became a music examiner and in 2007 released his first drumming publication. This would be the first of many books. Since the release of his first publication and combined with his examination experience, Mark has presented workshops and master classes on a national and international level. This has also led to gigs and performances throughout South East Asia where his books have been well received.

In 2018 Mark released the Drum Kit Fills series of publications. A series of books based on his passion for the subject of fills.

Mark has recorded, performed or toured with bands and artists including Strictly Ram, Borrowed Time, Sonic Soapbox, Eleventh Hour, Remedy Stone, Manassa, Peter Cupples, Inflatable Cows, Lotus Trojan and many more.

His publications include Drum Kit Compositions, the ANZCA Drum Kit Performance series, ANZCA Technical Work, ANZCA Sight Reading & Aural Tests, ANZCA Drum Kit General Knowledge and the Drum Kit Fills series.
